St Andrew's Church Pew Sheet for Sunday 11 April 2021 A response from the Bishop of Selby to the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip April 9th 2021 It is with sorrow that I join with you in mourning the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, a man whose life was one of dedicated service to this country, to the Queen and to his family. His down to earth speaking, his passion for the wellbeing of young people through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and his role as patron of many organisations won him the affection and respect of many. His zest for life was clearly seen in his enthusiasm for sport and the environment. The trauma of his family’s life following their exile from Greece when he was a baby and his education in France, Germany and this country, followed by service in the Royal Navy, bred in him a resilience which he drew upon as the Queen’s husband of over 70 years and her consort of 69 years. As we trust him to God’s merciful keeping we do so in Easter hope. May he rest in peace and rise in glory. + John Selby St Andrew’s Church will be open for private prayer during the period of mourning. We will share dates and times for this on our website as soon as they are confirmed. The Church of England has opened an online condolence book following the announcement from Buckingham Palace of the death of HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. The book is open to any individual or church communities who wish to sign and record a message. The Church of England also offers a virtual candle lighting service, which you can find here. So sorry you can’t be there! Malcolm Refresh (re)launches BOOSTA on Sunday For three years, attendees of our Refresh Cafe Church congregation have taken part in BOOSTA - the Bishopthorpe Order of St Andrew (the saint who was known for prayer, not the church!). We're launching BOOSTA 2021 at Refresh this week. To join BOOSTA, we ask people to make three commitments: pray more, read the bible more, and 'bless the world', for a period of six months. We have found that this is much easier together, so we also place people in small accountability groups. You don't need to be a member of Refresh to join in. To find out more about BOOSTA, click here. Keep in touch All links for services and to get in touch are on the website, but please remind anyone who isn't online to ring the office phone number (01904 700088), which is still being answered by our wonderfully patient church warden, Steve Hall. If you know anyone who has email please encourage them to sign up for this newsletter. Phone a friend to keep them up to date with the information on this pew sheet - or pick up a copy from the church porch and take it round to them. Forward this email to a friendPrayers We pray for the sick and housebound, particularly those undergoing hospital treatment. We give thanks for the lives of those who have died recently, particularly Ethel Blacker, Ruth Robinson, Margaret Merrick, Hannah Tew, and HRH Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh, and pray for their friends and family. We pray for our group of churches and for those people who are working to allow worship to continue while we don't have a vicar. A prayer for TodaySupport us, O Lord, all the day long of this troublous life, until the shades lengthen and the evening comes, the busy world is hushed, the fever of life is over and our work is done. Then, Lord, in your mercy grant us safe lodging, a holy rest, and peace at the last; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A message from the PCC (Your church council)
Dear friends Re Future plans for our parish Below you will see a statement from Archdeacon Sam. She has been in discussion with PCC for the past few weeks about an emerging idea she and Bishop John (Bishop of Selby) have developed. Bishop John now oversees ministry in York. The proposal for our church is to partner with St Chad’s and St Clement’s under the leadership of a new vicar. This would replace the current arrangement of sharing a vicar with the churches in Acaster Malbis, Appleton Roebuck and Acaster Selby. Bishop John and Archdeacon Sam have proposed a priest who will be interviewed later this month. The PCCs of the three churches will elect two reps each and they will represent the parishes at the interview. John Day who is the Archbishop of York’s Advisor in Mission Strategy is also the current part time vicar of St Chad’s and St Clements. He has been in touch with Steve our church warden and hopes to meet people from St Andrew’s PCC soon. He says “We shall map out the beginnings of our shared journey as we get to know each other. Let us hold our three churches in our prayers” Linda Brown Acting secretary of the PCC of St Andrew’s Bishopthorpe Future Ministry Plans – York St Chad’s & St Clement’s and St Andrew’s Bishopthorpe Bishop John and I have been working with the PCCs of St Chad’s, St Clement’s and St Andrew’s, and with the Area Deans of York and New Ainsty, to explore whether there is the potential for a new missional grouping of churches to serve the communities to the south of York City Centre. The aim is to create a group of three parishes under one ordained minister who will draw together and encourage the gifts and skills of a wide range of people, lay and ordained, who want to see growing Christian communities along the Bishopthorpe Road, out as far as Bishopthorpe itself. The new ministry team will support mission and ministry from the three worship centres of St Clement’s, St Chad’s and St Andrew’s, each of which has great resources in terms of buildings and history, and each of which will offer something distinctive to the local and the wider community. A potential candidate for the role of Priest-in-Charge across the emerging group has been identified and we aim to interview this person toward the end of March. It is envisaged that the Ven John Day, currently Priest-in-Charge at St Chads and Assistant Curate at St Clement’s , will remain as Assistant Curate in a part-time capacity in the new group for the time being, working alongside the newly appointed Priest-in-Charge. This is a really exciting opportunity to create a new mission and ministry team to serve this part of York. Please pray that God will lead the discernment of this plan in the coming weeks. Archdeacon Sam
